The Trump administration’s decision to ban transgender troops is a devastating attack on the rights of transgender people, military integrity, and fundamental democratic values. Trump’s order used false demonizing language, describing trans people as living in conflict “with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one’s personal life.”
With Pete Hegseth now leading the Pentagon, the enforcement of this policy signals a deliberate effort to transform the U.S. military into a weapon of far-right Christian Nationalism, which has long dehumanized the trans and queer community in general.
GPAHE strongly condemns this discriminatory order, which will force dedicated service members out of their roles, strip them of benefits, and further embolden efforts to institutionalize exclusionary religious extremism in government.
“This cruel targeting of trans service members is also about reshaping the military to reflect a Christian Nationalist vision that erases the LGBTQ+ community and others,” said Wendy Via, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE). “With Hegseth at the helm, the Pentagon is no longer serving national security—it’s enforcing an exclusionary, far-right agenda.”
Hegseth’s hostility toward LGBTQ+ rights has been well-documented. In recent podcast appearances, he described public schools as promoting an “egalitarian, dystopian LGBT nightmare” and aligned himself with Christian Nationalists who advocate for replacing democracy with religious rule. His confirmation now gives him the power to institutionalize these views throughout the military.
“This ban is likely just the beginning,” Heidi Beirich, co-founder of GPAHE, warned. “Under Hegseth, trans service members won’t just be forced out, they’ll be vilified, and likely the whole LGBTQ+ community will be demonized. We are going back to the bad old days when LGBTQ+ people were investigated and hounded out of the military. This is an authoritarian attack on inclusion, equality, and the very fabric of a democratic military.”
