Trump’s political playbook echoes Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s authoritarian model in Hungary, where elections exist but genuine electoral competition and other democratic protections have been dismantled. From gerrymandering congressional maps to consolidating control over the judiciary, immigration, education, and civil rights, Trump is following a well-worn path already championed by Orbán and openly embraced by Project 2025’s architects at the Heritage Foundation. What has transformed Hungary into what the European Parliament calls an “electoral autocracy” is now being implemented in the U.S., threatening to significantly erode American democracy.
