This research underscores the potential for these online threats to manifest into real-world violence, noting the historical ties between 4chan’s culture and extremist acts.

White supremacists and neo-Nazis are rallying behind Trump’s renewed push for mass deportations, family separations, and immigrant roundups, particularly energized by his appointments to the administration of anti-immigrant hardliners Stephen Miller and Tom Homan. On 4chan, anti-immigrant rhetoric, including terms like “deportation” and racist conspiracy theories like the “Great Replacement,” have surged dramatically post-election. This spike in violent, racist discourse reveals extremists’ approval of policies targeting immigrants, increasing fears that this rhetoric could escalate into real-world violence.

Trump’s pledge to pardon January 6th rioters underscores a strategic attempt to reframe the Capitol attack, casting convicted insurrectionists as “patriots” and emboldening extremist factions like the white supremacist Proud Boys. Trump’s rhetoric not only encourages extremist factions but also challenges the integrity of the justice system, signaling political violence as an acceptable response to electoral outcomes.
In an interview with the BBC, GPAHE Co-Founder Wendy Via said pardons would “make a mockery of our justice system, and it will send the message to his followers that violence is a legitimate response to political outcomes they don’t like.” This rhetoric, GPAHE warns, normalizes political violence and poses a severe threat to our democracy.

Update from GPAHE: Letter to Facebook Oversight Board – Criticism of EU Migration Policies and Immigrants
In a recent submission to the Facebook Oversight Board, GPAHE built on its previous response to an Oversight Board inquiry on political speech, where it warned that Facebook’s broad exceptions for “newsworthy” content and political speech had created a dangerous loophole for extremism and disinformation to spread through political discourse. GPAHE recommends that Meta tighten its policies to prevent harmful content in the form of political speech and political ads from spreading. urging the Board to push for meaningful reforms in Meta’s content moderation practices.
The submission also calls for greater transparency in Meta’s content moderation practices. Citing Facebook’s inconsistent handling of hate speech, extremism, and incitement of violence, GPAHE emphasized that the platform’s current approach often enables harmful content especially in languages other than English to thrive unchecked.
