Project 2025 Blog: May 21st Update

Our blog series provides essential updates on Project 2025!

This week, we look at who is funding Project 2025 supporter Chris Rufo, Citizens for Sanity’s vile and robustly funded advertising campaign, and Project 2025 supporter Independent Women’s Forum. We also hear from Ben Carson on why divorce should be outlawed. Read the full post to stay in the know on Project 2025 developments.

NEW from GPAHE: Meta’s AI Companion Returns Inaccurate Information About Project 2025

GPAHE tested Meta AI’s responses on both Instagram and meta.ai by asking about Project 2025, the far-right initiative aimed at dismantling civil rights and steering the U.S. towards authoritarianism. Shockingly, when prompted, Meta AI on Instagram endorsed the Project instead of providing an unbiased explanation or highlighting its harmful impacts on democracy. Check out how our investigation underscores the critical need for Meta to address these biases, especially given Instagram’s two billion active monthly users who might rely on this AI for information.

We’ve been keeping a close watch on AI developments and how the tool is used by extremists to spread hate online. Earlier this year, we reported on 4cahn’s bigoted AI campaign, hosted on GitHub, that maliciously altered people’s bodies and appearance and received endorsements from extremists. Read more here.

NEW from GPAHE: GPAHE releases joint recommendations to preserve democracy, Biden’s Summit for Democracy

GPAHE is actively involved in the “Year of Action” by the U.S. Summit for Democracy (S4D), a key initiative of the Biden-Harris administration to strengthen global democracies. As part of S4D’s Information Integrity working group, GPAHE has helped to address the threat of disinformation and harassment targeted at vulnerable communities to influence elections. This week, the working group released a report on the dangers of political microtargeting. In this election year, political advertising microtargeting (PMT) takes on heightened importance, because, when misused, this tool poses major risks to democracy. Read more on PMT and learn about our recommendations to combat these threats and protect democratic integrity worldwide.

LaJornada: What was seen in Madrid, just the tip of the far-right iceberg

“Experts point out that the interactions between these [far-right] groups go back decades and now include some openly fascist groups. In fact, the Alabama-based Global Project Against Hate reports that when about a thousand neo-Nazis, neo-fascists, and white nationalists marched in France on May 9 to commemorate the death of a far-right militant, at least three US groups joined that event.” [Translated from Spanish]

GPAHE’s Take: GPAHE has been monitoring the expanding transnational networks of extremist groups. Recently, we reported on U.S. groups exporting their hate during the annual May 9 march in Paris, hosted by French neo-Nazis. These efforts to spread hatred extend beyond local group collaborations. As La Jornada reports, top leaders of far-right think tanks and far-right political figures are amplifying each other’s dangerous rhetoric on the global stage at conferences like CPAC. Next month, we will be releasing a deep dive analyzing the speakers and organizations in more than 300 far-right conferences. It will show just how deep far right transnational ties have become.
