GPAHE’s research, notably our report Conversion Therapy Online: The Ecosystem 2023, the third publication in our series exposing the online presence of this dangerous practice, has played a crucial role in removing this harmful content from tech platforms. The permanent removal of Joseph Nicolosi Sr.’s YouTube account was directly linked to our report, which criticized YouTube for hosting such content. Nicolosi Sr.’s therapeutic practices are condemned by reputable medical institutions globally. We’re proud that our efforts have led to the removal of numerous harmful accounts, yet ongoing advocacy is essential, especially in non-English speaking countries where this medical disinformation content flourishes.

NEW from GPAHE: Fortnite’s Political Content Encourages Violence and Allows Players to Stage a Capitol Insurrection
Our ongoing investigation into extremism and election-related content on gaming platforms has unveiled concerning user-generated content within the immensely popular game Fortnite. This content promotes insurrection and pits world leaders against each other in violent matches. Fortnite’s developer, Epic Games, has been on our radar due to their history of platforming problematic content and allowing hate to spread on their games. After our reporting, it’s become increasingly apparent that there’s a need for more robust content moderation in the game’s “creative mode,” which allows users to design these problematic games.

Espresso: Mário Machado sentenced to two years and 10 months in prison
We’ve been closely watching this trial unfold in Portugal because Mário Machado has ties to an extremist anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant organization, Grupo 1143, that we sounded the alarm on earlier this year. Machado has been sentenced for inciting hatred online, specifically against women and local leaders. His actions are in line with others of the group who have been responsible for tearing down LGBTQ+ flags and the harassment of minorities across the country.
GPAHE’s previous warnings about the threat posed by Grupo 1143 seem to have materialized, with members of 1143 now suspected of carrying out attacks last week on migrants in Porto. Hopefully, if Machado serves time, Grupo 1143 may collapse, as has happened to other extremist organizations Machado led in the past, including the Portuguese Hammerskins, Nova Ordem Social, and the Frente Nacional.
