An historic court case could pave the way for a ban on CasaPound, one of Italy’s most prominent and openly fascist movements, after 12 members were convicted under the country’s 1952 Scelba law for attempting to reconstitute the dissolved Fascist Party. Long known for glorifying Benito Mussolini and promoting “third millennium fascism,” CasaPound has built a record of political violence, anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ+ agitation, and deep ties to transnational extremist networks, appearing alongside white surpemacist groups such as Patriot Front and Nordic Resistance Movement. The ruling marks the first time an Italian court has formally recognized CasaPound as a fascist organization, raising the prospect of dissolution even as the group signals it will appeal, highlighting the broader challenge democracies face in confronting extremist movements that operate openly within political systems and across borders.

The case of Georgian national Michail Chkhikvishvili, who pleaded guilty to plotting a poisoning of Jewish children in New York, reveals how groups like the MKY use encrypted platforms to distribute illustrated handbooks with instructions on weapons, target selection, evading law enforcement, and staging mass-casualty attacks. Often cross-promoted among neo-Nazi networks such as Terrorgram and Com-linked groups like 764 and No Lives Matter, these publications blend ideology with step-by-step guidance, gamifying violence through “points systems,” and explicitly target minors for recruitment and abuse.
