GPAHE Brings You the Latest News in Far-Right Hate and Extremism

European Interest: Project 2025: A Threat to Global Democracies By Wendy Via and Heidi Beirich

“The United States, once called the ‘beacon of democracy’ is facing a new and dangerous threat of authoritarianism and Christian Nationalism. And, if some of the groups behind this far-right movement have their way, European democracies would be next.”

GPAHE’s take: GPAHE is the first to thoroughly analyze Project 2025, revealing the strategy behind the authoritarian plan put together by the far-right Heritage Foundation and supported by over 80 other organizations. GPAHE co-founders Wendy Via and Heidi Beirich have repeatedly warned that if Project 2025 comes to fruition, it could embolden far-right movements globally and pose a threat to democracy worldwide.

New York Times: Germans Elect Far-Right City Mayor, a Boost for the AfD

“Across Germany, the AfD now polls at around 22 percent support, second only to the conservative Christian Democratic Union and well ahead of the governing Social Democrats. The AfD is poised to gain more power when three states in the east vote for their legislatures next year.”

GPAHE’s take: GPAHE recently released a report, “Far-Right Hate and Extremist Groups, Germany,” also available in German, outlining 21 hate and extremist groups, including the increasingly popular Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. The report highlights these groups’ practices of demeaning, harassing, or inciting violence based on identity traits and reveals how many of them work in concert to grow their movements and spread hateful propaganda. The recent German election results should alarm democracies globally.

CNN: Activists link US nonprofit to anti-LGBTQ laws in Africa. The group says it’s only promoting ‘family values’

“… [O]ne prominent US lobbying group has faced persistent accusations of spreading anti-LGBTQ sentiment in several African countries. For months, CNN has investigated whether the Arizona-based organization Family Watch International, and its founder Sharon Slater, have helped promote a raft of homophobic bills in Uganda, Kenya and Ghana. The group has repeatedly denied these allegations.”

GPAHE’s take: We’ve reported on the persistent threat of American anti-LGBTQ+ organizations exporting their tactics abroad and emboldening regimes around the world to adopt policies that endanger the human rights of LGBTQ+ people. We’ve also documented how anti-LGBTQ+ organizations proliferate the dangerous practice of conversion therapy online.

Business Post: Exclusive: the X Files – how Elon Musk’s new rules allow hate to flourish

“Elon Musk’s X has instructed staff not to suspend users that post explicitly racist, sexist and homophobic content, or who send sexual material to another person, as part of a new policy that has radically stripped back the company’s moderation of abusive material.”

GPAHE’s take: Under Musk’s leadership, X has seen a surge of far-right, populist extremists, attributed to Musk’s relaxed content moderation policies. This has led to the reinstatement of prominent neo-Nazis and white supremacists who post hateful and violent content without facing suspensions. Online platforms are breeding grounds for hate and extremism, and while our research has contributed to the de-platforming of figures spreading the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory and other hateful material, the recent reversal in X’s content moderation policies is a step in the wrong direction.
