The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics sparked an intense anti-LGBTQ+ backlash from far-right groups in Europe and the U.S. following a performance featuring drag artists that was falsely accused of denigrating Christians and Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” Despite artistic director Thomas Jolly’s intention to promote love and inclusion, figures like Marion-Maréchal Le Pen and Donald Trump condemned the event as an affront to Christianity, labeling it “Satanic.” The performers faced severe online harassment and threats of violence. This incident underscores the escalating hostility toward LGBTQ+ representation from far-right actors worldwide.
