NEW from GPAHE: Turkish Attacker Steeped in Neo-Nazism and Online Gaming Culture
On August 12, an 18-year-old launched a violent attack at the Tepebaşı Mosque in Eskişehir, Turkey, stabbing five people. The assailant, who was wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest adorned with a Nazi “sonnenrad,” live-streamed the assault on Twitter using a webcam attached to his vest. He explained his actions in a manifesto filled with neo-Nazism, antisemitism, and a glorification of far-right mass shooters. His writings also reveal the influence of online gaming culture, where he gamified future acts of terrorism, assigning point values to various suggested acts of violence. This attack highlights the dangerous intersection of radicalization, online extremism, and gaming culture, where hate-filled ideologies can spread globally and lead to real-world violence. GPAHE has been working to stop hate and political violence in gaming, including recently documenting violent antisemitic and political content on the massive game Fortnite.

“While many of these types of counselors, either licensed therapists or as a part of a faith-based organization, or both, vehemently deny that they’re engaging in conversion therapy, claiming instead that they are rooting out deep-seated traumas that might have caused same-sex attraction, or just dealing with unwanted same-sex attraction, it’s still conversion therapy in principle. Any ‘treatment’ that seeks to change a person’s orientation or identity is effectively conversion therapy,” said Wendy Via, co-founder of GPAHE.
“These outfits are pushing an anti-LGBTQ and anti-woman agenda in Europe very successfully. [T]hey’re extremely strategic and effective,” said Via.
