The Guardian: Trump’s counter-terror cuts will harm fight against far right, experts warn
“The crackdown after January 6 definitely had a dampening effect on the activities of the far right and especially their ability to commit violence,” said Heidi Beirich, co-founder of GPAHE. “Now they will be back, and given this is the No 1 source of domestic terrorism, people will likely pay for these changes with their lives.”
GPAHE’s take: Trump’s cuts to counter-terrorism funding are dismantling critical programs that track and prevent far-right violence. As GPAHE noted in its recent report, the decision to defund key research efforts, including those on domestic terrorism and radicalization, threatens to leave a significant gap in understanding and addressing these growing threats. As the FBI shifts resources away from domestic extremism, concerns are rising that the U.S. could face a dangerous resurgence in far-right violence, with alarming consequences for public safety.
