Update from GPAHE: Confirmation of Harmeet Dhillon to Lead DOJ Civil Rights Division and Pete Hoekstra as U.S. Ambassador to Canada
The Senate has confirmed Harmeet Dhillon, a longtime legal adviser to Trump and election denier, to lead the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. Despite a record of undermining voting and other civil rights, she is now tasked with protecting them.
Dhillon has spent her career defending far-right causes and challenging civil rights protections. As Trump’s pick to head the DOJ Civil Rights Division, her nomination raises significant concerns about the DOJ’s willingness to pursue its mandate of ensuring civil rights protections. Additionally, Pete Hoekstra has been confirmed as U.S. Ambassador to Canada, despite his history of anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry. Hoekstra is also a contributor to the rights-stripping conservative Project 2025. This appointment comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Ottawa, fueling concerns about the future of U.S.-Canada relations. GPAHE Is Stepping Up Monitoring Efforts Amid the Trump Administration’s Abandonment of Efforts to Counter Far-Right Extremism
As far-right extremism grows in both strength and influence in the U.S., and the federal government dismantles its efforts to counter this extremism, GPAHE is ramping up its monitoring efforts. The disturbing developments within federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ), are reminiscent of earlier periods when the federal government ignored this domestic terrorism threat, such as in the years leading up to the Oklahoma City bombing. As agencies ditch their efforts to confront extremist movements, the door is left open for further violence.
In testimony before the House Select Committee on January 6th, GPAHE co-founders Wendy Via and Heidi Beirich outlined how decades of ignoring far-right extremists allowed these movements to grow unchecked. As the federal government moves away from countering extremism, GPAHE is committed to intensifying its monitoring efforts to protect vulnerable communities from hate crimes and domestic terrorism.

GPAHE contributes intelligence internationally: Diagolon Founder Brings New “Nationalist” Organization Into Public For The First Time.
Second Sons Canada, a new far-right organization founded by Diagolon leader Jeremy MacKenzie, made its first public appearance in Halifax on March 30 as reported by our Canadian allies the Canadian Anti-Hate Network. Presented as a nationalist fraternity, the group’s rhetoric and imagery closely mirror those of American and Australian neo-Nazi groups with which Diagolon has longstanding ties. GPAHE has documented MacKenzie and Diagolon extensively, exposing their violent, racist, and antisemitic content, including public calls for mass deportations and genocidal statements, and their transnational ties.
