The hate-filled murders at Club Q in Colorado Springs is only the latest devastating attack targeting the LGBTQ+ community. The relentless dehumanization and demonization of LGBTQ+ people by far-right politicians, extremist religious leaders, and hateful ideology adherents — often spread online — will continue to result in violence if this rhetoric and push for irrational, hateful, and rights-restricting legislation isn’t stopped.
The normalization of abuse and fear mongering against LGBTQ+ people throughout this nation, and across the globe, is a shameful commentary on what far-right leaders at all levels are willing to do to build their hateful and exclusionary vision of how the world should be.
We urge the politically powerful and all those who deny equal rights, and indeed the very existence of LGBTQ+ people, to stop immediately, and we demand that social media companies halt the proliferation of anti-LGBTQ+ speech.
LGBTQ+ people deserve to feel safe. We must all come together to fight against hate and far-right extremism and create a world where love prevails.
