This far-right, extremist agenda is a threat to a multiracial, diverse democracy
The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) today released its deep-dive analysis into the “2025 Presidential Transition Project” (Project 2025), led by the far-right Heritage Foundation and supported by more than 80 organizations, many well-known for their extreme positions and for pushing hate and Christian Nationalism.
“Our country is facing an authoritarian threat from far-right extremists and Christian Nationalists in a new, unique, and frightening way,” said GPAHE co-founder Wendy Via. “Voters, political figures, and the media must be on alert that Project 2025 is an authoritarian roadmap to dismantling a thriving, inclusive democracy for all.”
GPAHE released its analysis roughly a year out from the 2024 elections, arguing that this plan for the “next conservative president,” would, under the guise of religious freedom, impose on all Americans policies pushed by Christian Nationalists, including draconian and reactionary measures when it comes to sexual health and reproductive rights, LGBTQ+ equality, racial equity, public education, the climate, and preference an exclusionary interpretation of Christianity, stripping rights from other communities.
The new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson fits squarely into this agenda, as he has cut his teeth using the courts to marginalize women, LGBTQ+ people, and others and impose his version of Christianity onto all. Alliance Defending Freedom, a Project 2025 supporter and where Johnson once worked as an attorney and spokesperson, is behind the recent court cases overturning Roe and winning the right to discriminate based on one’s faith. One of their clients even denied adoption to a couple because they were Jewish.
According to the analysis, Project 2025 would also dangerously expand the executive branch’s powers including stripping the independence of the DOJ and FBI and politicizing their investigations by placing them in the hands of the president. This is a staggering threat as illustrated by Trump’s Nazi-inspired words: “In honor of our great Veterans on Veterans Day, we pledge to you that we will root out the Communists, Marxists, Fascists, and Radical Left Thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country, lie, steal, and cheat on Elections, and will do anything possible, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America, and the American dream.”
“Project 2025 threatens Americans’ civil and human rights, and is an attack on our very democracy,” said GPAHE co-founder Heidi Beirich. “Project 2025 does not reflect the values of the American people, and our plea to political leaders and to the media is to accurately describe Project 2025 as a dangerous and unconstitutional attempt to move us towards an authoritarianism guided by Christian Nationalism.”
