The pardoning and commutation of January 6th rioters represent a shameful moment in U.S. history. These individuals, whose actions during the Capitol attack, which included attacking police officers of whom more than 100 were injured, were central to an assault on our democracy and are now being rewarded under the guise of patriotism. This decision further normalizes political violence, emboldens white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys, extremist militias, and others, and undermines the rule of law.
The Proud Boys, some of whose leadership have been pardoned or had their sentences commuted and whose members have a long track record of violence, have openly celebrated these pardons and are now positioning themselves as enforcers of Trump’s policy agenda, including aiding in deportations and escalating anti-LGBTQ+ threats. Their rhetoric and actions reflect a broader threat: continuing political violence, the erosion of human rights, the rule of law, and democratic institutions.
“This move doesn’t just rewrite the narrative of January 6—it sets a dangerous precedent that political violence is a legitimate tool in American democracy,” said Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism. “By rewarding those who sought to overturn an election through force, the administration is sending a clear message that undermines the rule of law.”
Extremist thinking and activity have already been normalized because of January 6 and Trump’s insistence, along with other GOP leaders, that these individuals are patriots being persecuted by the justice system, just as he claims to be. By granting these pardons, Trump is empowering extremists who see their actions as sanctioned by his leadership. This includes militias at the border, already preparing to “help” round up immigrants, Proud Boys who are escalating threats against the LGBTQ+ community, and those who are fantasizing about being called on to enforce Trump’s policies.
“By granting these pardons, the administration not only legitimizes violent extremism but also jeopardizes public trust in justice and government, feeding into Trump’s long-standing narrative of a corrupt and un-American system. Far from justice, these pardons represent a dangerous step toward normalizing authoritarianism and validating those who use violence to dismantle democracy,” said Wendy Via, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism.
