The Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) is gravely concerned about the recent wave of far-right rioting and racist anti-immigrant violence in the UK. Far-right movements in multiple countries, including the UK, have long targeted immigrants with disinformation and hatred, particularly related to false allegations of “migrant crime,” which has spilled into the real world in multiple countries that now include the UK.
Heidi Beirich, co-founder of GPAHE, emphasized in her BBC interview this past Saturday that these violent acts are part of a broader, disturbing trend of rising far-right extremism, largely driven from hateful lies and disinformation spread in online spaces. “The involvement of far-right individuals stoking anti-immigrant hatred and violence is a stark reminder of how far-right, anti-immigrant hatred can threaten public safety,” Beirich stated. “Tech companies need to enforce their rules against online hatred and disinformation, so that this type of real world violence isn’t sparked from the online world.”
The recent events in the UK highlight a pattern of attacks fueled by hate. GPAHE calls on local and national authorities to take immediate measures to protect vulnerable communities and ensure that those responsible for such crimes are brought to justice, which the UK government has promised. This situation illustrates the critical need for comprehensive strategies to combat hate and extremism, including education, awareness campaigns, and inclusive policy frameworks.
