Today’s Supreme Court decision overturning the constitutional right to an abortion is the result of a decades-long, relentless effort by far-right conservatives and extremists seeking to revert to a US legal system that strips women, LGBTQ people, and people of color of their basic rights to make decisions about their bodies, who they love, how they live, and their right to vote. Today’s ruling will have the greatest impact on people of color and people living in poverty.
With Trump’s three appointees, far-right extremist ideas have now found a home on the Supreme Court. This is likely only the beginning of a series of additional rights-stripping rulings that will take us back to a time when women, the LGBTQ community, people of color and religious minorities were second class citizens.
We cannot give up. We must continue to work to stop far-right extremists and their agenda with the same laser-focus that they have employed for years. We must expose those who wish to marginalize their fellow Americans and together do everything we can to turn the tide against those who threaten our civil and human rights.
