In a groundbreaking report released today, the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) offers an in-depth analysis of the complex and alarming growth of far-right extremism in Mexico. The report, “Far Right Hate and Extremist Groups, Mexico” delves into the intricate web of historical, social, and political factors that have contributed to a resurgence of organized far-right groups in the country. GPAHE’s report provides in-depth profiles of 12 far-right organizations in Mexico, many with ties to American groups. By examining the interplay between longstanding prejudices, recent progressive reforms, and global far-right trends, the report provides a nuanced understanding of how these extremist movements are gaining traction and influencing Mexican society, while also drawing concerning parallels to similar phenomena observed in other parts of the world where the far right is also on the march.

Key findings of the report include:

  1. Far-right groups with anti-LGBTQ+, anti-immigrant, and neo-Nazi ideologies are growing.
  2. Rising prominence of organizations such as Frente Nacional Por La Familia, ProLife Army, and Union, Nación, Revolución.
  3. Growing connections between Mexican far-right groups and similar organizations in the United States and Europe.
  4. An alarming spike in hate crimes, particularly against LGBTQ+ individuals.

“Our research reveals a disturbing trend in Mexico. We’re seeing a significant rise in far-right extremism that threatens the progress Mexico has made towards becoming a more inclusive society. These groups are well-organized, increasingly vocal, and pose a real danger to vulnerable communities and democratic values,” Wendy Via, CEO and co-founder of GPAHE, stated.

The report traces the historical roots of bigotry and extremism in Mexico, examining how deeply ingrained prejudices continue to fuel discrimination against marginalized groups. It also highlights how recent progressive reforms have sparked a backlash from conservative forces, leading to more organized and vocal opposition.

“What’s particularly concerning is the transnational nature of these movements. The same rhetoric and tactics we see in the U.S. and Europe are now taking root in Mexico. It’s a stark reminder that in our interconnected world, the fight against extremism must be global,” Dr. Heidi Beirich, co-founder of GPAHE, added.

GPAHE’s report argues that this resurgence of far-right ideology poses a significant challenge to Mexico’s social and political landscape, threatening to exacerbate existing tensions in a country already grappling with high levels of violence and human rights violations.

As Mexico continues to navigate complex social and political challenges, GPAHE’s findings serve as a crucial resource for understanding and addressing the growing threat of far-right extremism. GPAHE remains committed to monitoring these developments and providing insights to support efforts in creating a more inclusive and just society.
